Tuesday November 5th, 2019 – APT is testing Cybersecurity solutions for electrical power intelligent devices. For instance, this includes relays, meters, generators, transfer switches, and uninterruptible power supplies.
New CA SB-327 effective in 2020 – Bad actors can exploit most of the electrical equipment in your own distribution system that has communications capabilities. As a result, the state of California is enacting new legislation to try and reduce this risk in SB-327 which becomes effective on Jan 1st, 2020:
Beginning on January 1, 2020, SB-327 requires manufacturers of connected devices, as those terms are defined, to equip each device with a reasonable security feature or features that are appropriate to the nature and function of the device, appropriate to the information it may collect, contain, or transmit, and designed to protect the device and any information contained therein from unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification, or disclosure, as specified.

So, What does this mean?
In short, APT interprets the new legislation to require the installation of secure serial to Ethernet gateways and secure Ethernet switches with new equipment that connect via serial, wireless or Ethernet. Furthermore, you must change any default passwords for new and existing connected intelligent electrical devices.
